Don't Be Afraid to Overflow

I painted this in the early morning, just as the sun was beginning to warm the sky. I was thinking about that feeling when the day is just getting started and everything feels possible.

I love these flowers. The poppies especially. They have so much energy and personality. The white flowers feel a little quieter, but they still seem to be reaching and stretching right along with everything else.

There are lots of layers and textures in this painting. Scraped marks, bits of color underneath, little bits of pattern. I like that you can see some of what came before. It makes the painting feel a little more alive.

And woven into the painting is one of my favorite reminders: “Don’t Be Afraid to Overflow.”

Because why not? Why not take up a little more space? Why not let your joy, your creativity, your ideas, your energy spill over?

This is a painting about flowers, certainly. But it’s also about that feeling of having so much inside you that you don't want to hold it all back.
